The Constraints of Life
Have you ever longed for freedom from our rigid social rules,
And wished you could do anything you pleased?
Have you ever thought our public laws to be conceived by fools,
And that all man-made restrictions should be eased?
-----
A cat sat on a garden wall and preened her velvet fur
Whilst down below a barking dog was chained.
But the cat just went on grooming, with a soft, contented purr,
For the dog's frustrated anger by his collar was restrained.
----
The feline stretched her sinews and she flexed her razor claws
And the dog leapt up and choked against his chain.
He snapped and gnashed in fury with white-flashing angry jaws
As the cat sat and regarded him with insolent disdain.
----
At length, the cat, in boredom, padded off along the wall
And leapt down to the street with agile grace -
But never saw the motor car approaching her at all
Until, too late, she tried to beat its wheels, and lost the race.
-----
The dog, though still imprisoned, is still very much alive,
Whilst the cat - though free - lies very very dead.
So the curious conclusion at which one must arrive
Is "It's best to be restrained to live, than free to die instead!"

Signs of the Times…
Why is it everywhere we go
The traffic-signs begin with "NO…"?
And on a traffic light, the top
Position always goes to "STOP"?
Our modern world appears to be
A negative society.
Still, we may live to see the day
When signs begin with YES! YOU MAY!"
